We already have results of the Grenaches du Monde 2021 award and the Gandesa Cooperative has obtained two gold medals: one for the Puresa Rancio and another for the White Mistela Somdinou. Experienced tasters were able to discover the diversity offered by the grape variety and evaluate the quality of the wines entered in this year's competition. All professions were represented: journalists, sommeliers, buyers, distributors and winemakers. The more than 300 award-winning wines illustrate the quality of the wines presented and make up a palette of territories that invites you to travel to these terroirs that share the Garnacha. Grenaches du Monde is an annual contest open to all wines from the majority Grenache, without restriction of color, origin or nationality. This traveling event has a clear international vocation, and the ambition to discover the singularities and diversity inherent in the grape variety.
With 192,455 hectares of vineyards, the Grenache ranks seventh among the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. Emblematic of the Mediterranean countries, it ranks third in Europe with 178,628 hectares, that is, 93% of the world surface. France, Spain and Italy are the three main producing countries, but Grenache is very popular all over the world: North and South Africa, Australia, North and South America, Croatia, Greece, Lebanon, etc. The first stage took place in the young DOP Cebreros May 10, 2021, this appellation of origin is located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, a hundred kilometers from Madrid in the province of Ávila (Castilla y León): it is a territory formed by the mountains of the Sierra de Gredos and by old vineyards of Garnacha Negra and Albillo Real. Châteauneuf-du-Pape was the next stage, on May 14, 2021. Since 1936, this appellation has produced renowned white and red wines. Power, concentration, but also finesse in a privileged environment, where the sun and the wind play a fundamental role in the qualitative expression of the Garnacha ... and its companions in assemblages. The competition then moved to Perpignan on May 17, 2021. Between sea and mountains, Roussillon is a territory with a very varied landscape, with a sunny and warm climate, favorable for growing grapes. Authentic amphitheater open to the east on the Mediterranean Sea, it borders three massifs: the Corbières to the north, the Pyrenees with Mount Canigó to the west and the Alberas to the south. Roussillon is a territory rich in diversity, as reflected by its 14 AOPs and 2 IGPs. The marathon was finished on June 1, 2021 in Ascoli Piceno, capital of the Italian Brands. El Piceno is a territory that hides many surprises, starting with its geographical configuration, which is characterized by the presence of hills, mountainous areas and a small plain bathed by the Adriatic Sea.
Created in 2013 by the Interprofessional Council of Roussillon Wines (CIVR) of Perpignan, the Grenaches du Monde competition traveled for the first time in 2016 with its first edition transferred to Aragon (Campo de Borja), then to Sardinia (2017) and Catalonia (Terra Alta, 2018). The Contest returns to Perpignan in 2019, and the following year it travels again to Montpellier in collaboration with Vinos de Pays d'Oc, the world's leading producer of Grenache rosé wines. The next edition of the contest will take place in the spring of 2022, in New York (United States) thanks to the collaboration between the European Union, the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon and the Garnacha Origen association: "After visiting various farmlands of Grenache, the time has come to take a position in the largest consumer market in the world ", concludes Fabrice Rieu, president of the Contest.
